He was very generous to extend to me an offer of protection should Claryssa be taken in for questioning, leaving me without a trustworthy guard. I would stay with his cousin, Lady Liliane, in her tent."

With a sigh. "You were with him last night, weren't you?"

Her eyebrow raised, ever so slightly. "Last night? If you mean last evening, yes. We had an evening dinner while Claryssa went to the market where I was attacked to see the area and get to know it. I have been wary of crowds since then and House Marten was gracious enough to offer to aid in the man being brought to justice. I assure you, we did nothing but share a meal and a conversation. There is a witness. It's not as though we were completely alone. Is someone claiming differently?"

“Of all the times to be separated from your handmaiden,” Olymer shook his head, “who is this witness, then? Someone known to your parents?” The troubled expression returned, “people are talking. What they say isn’t the issue, it’s that they have reason to gossip.”

"It was the servant that came with the Marten household." She said somewhat defeated. "This was meant to protect me from harm. I couldn't be left alone, and going into public... I don't know how this possibly became such a vicious rumor. Will you help me find the source, Olymer? It certainly feels like I'm being attacked from all sides."
