"70, including House Tremaine, I believe." She said with confidence, which she probably would have even if she was wrong.

"Very good Lady Mariessa, Lady Alicent" Simon nodded happily, rewarding the Feyther with a kind smile. He had expected the Tremaine's to have a rather good idea as they had been born in Reach. However, he hadn't expected someone further away to be so well acquainted with the matters of the realm. "Close, still, Lady Jynessa." she too, got an approving nod. "Seventy or so houses, all sworn to Tyrells - directly or otherwise. Rich and bountiful region, as you well know."


"Maester Vaben notes that green or vert is common color in the arms of the reach. Along with or, yellow. While one might easily think this is because of Tyrell and their vert and or - this is not the case. At least if you believe master Vaben." he paused, checking if any of his students had anything to ask. "Which brings us to next point. Which House ruled Reach before the Conquest? And what are the colors of that house?"

Mari was scribbling with her quill, but if she was actually writing anything worthwhile was a mystery.

"... House Garderner. An open hand, vert, on argent." She said after a few moments of thoughts.

As much as she was a lazy student, she also did seem to have taken the multitude of lessons she had recieved the past year to heart. Being the Tremaine heir had pushed quite a lot of responsibilities on her shoulders, and she wasn't the kind to shirk away from her duty to her father.

She nodded in agreement with Mari and added, "I'm sure the hand is a reference to the legendary progenitor of House Gardener, Garth Greenhand, though his son officially founded it. Half the House's in the Reach are supposedly descended from his many children, though Tyrell isn't one of them."

Jyn let out a soft sigh at her wrong answer but otherwise kept her mouth shut. She thought on the next topic and then listened to the others speak about a House Gardener that she had never heard of. The younger twin dipped her head in resignation.

"Very good lady Mariessa." he sounded content, as if he had expected her to know. "Also, lady Alicent proves to be well read." Simon rewarded the bookish girl with an another smile. He turned to Jynessa. "Lady Jynessa might want to take notes. The history of Reach is important if you want to understand the current situation of the realm. And why wouldn't you. Your future lord husband, the Seven willing, will be relying for your council." Of course chances were her future husband only sought a bed warmer and someone bear him an heir.

Clearing his throat, the young Maester continued, addressing everyone again. "It was indeed house Gardener that commanded the Reach during the Conquest. King, well, back then Reach was a kingdom, Mern the ninth joined forces with the Lannisters to push back the invading Targaryens. While the two armies did manage to break the Targaryen forces, nothing could stand before the dragons and thousands of men burned alive. Including King Mern. Later, Mern's High Steward, Harlen Tyrell, surrendered Highgarden to Aegon I Targaryen. For this Aegon the first granted the Reach to Tyrells that have been the custodians of the lands since." he paused, letting the girls scribble down notes if they so chose to.

"It seems that Lannister king of the time survived and indeed surrendered himself to the Targaryens. Is this correct lady Alicent?" She ought to have known, at least. "However, measter Vaben seems to think that Gardener line did not die with king Mern. See, we have the house Oldflower. Landed knights, no nobler than Tremaine." turning to regard the Tremainer girls, Simon tapped his chin and added. "My ladies, you remember house Oldflower and their arms?"

red bend sinister = the sigil of bastard. Alicent would roll at 15 and 21. But you'll get freebie with the story of Loren the first of Lannisters.

Mari had no idea, really. If she had heard of this before, then it had promptly been forgotten, and she flipped a little through her own notes. Mostly to look like she knew what she was looking for.

"... Doesn't House Tyrell claim their lineage back to House Gardener through the female line?" she asked, deflecting away from the fact that she did not know the answer. Classic Mari move.

That... gave Alicent a challenge, and for the life of her, she couldn't remember anything about the family, but the name gave her a mental image. She closed her eyes and said, "Um... Vert, 10 hands 4-3-2-1 argent debruised by a bend sinister gules... The... red bend sinister says bastard to me, but I can't remember the details or much about the House itself." She looked a little frustrated, despite really not having any reason to even know the arms. "I must've seen the arms somewhere."

"House Oldflower?" Jyn covered her mouth with her fingertips and thought further on the matter. Eventually, her entire palm was over her lips as her brow furrowed in reflection. She then recollected her posture and began to depart from the tent. "I am terribly sorry but I just remembered that i promised father I would pick up a bottle of Arbor Gold for the festivities tonight."
